Hey guys,


So, it’s no secret the past couple of weeks have been quite challenging emotionally, physically, and spiritually, you name it. I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out our next discussion piece: from friendship to colourism to racism but those were all too heavy and close to home for the climate we are in. While I want this platform to touch on real issues relevant to us, I also want it to provide a sense of escapism- to be a place where we can talk about prospective concepts not just the regrets of the past and the present.


With that in mind, the discussion I chose for today is not really your conventional, everyday conversation but it’s something to encourage and uplift your spirits in this time. I will be using some biblical verses, motivational quotes and so forth in this post. Just as a disclaimer, this platform is open to any and every religious background so don’t be afraid to voice your practice in the comments below, if you feel compelled to.





Let’s dig right in, todays topic is mainly about spirituality. I really wanted to touch on the power of words and the influence of positivity.


“Death and life are in the power of the tongue” – Proverbs 18:21


“Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech” – 1 Peter 3:10


“The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit” – Proverbs 15:4


The spiritual world is a big mystery to me. It’s very difficult to feel connected to an entity that is not tangible. Which is probably why a lot of people struggle with the concept of religion; worshipping what you can’t see and such. Nonetheless, I’m sure we can all relate to a moment in our lives when we were at our wits end and then something unexpected manifests, almost like magic. How do you explain that? I believe, there’s a supernatural entity that computes all that is exhibited in the physical realm (God for me, whomever for you). However religion aside, I also think we as humans also have some power in the overall direction of our lives. Our thoughts, words, actions amongst other specificities, are determining factors. Some call it karma. Some call it the recycling of energy. I don’t know. I’m just a firm believer in ‘whatever I put out there, I’m sure to get back no matter what’ (whatever you sow, you reap). Life and death are in the power of the tongue, depending on the fate you’re after, speak accordingly. Not just in difficult times (like now) but just make it a part of your lifestyle to control your thoughts. It’s so easy to be negative, to spew hate. But like my grandmother used to say, in so many words, “saka wataura makuhwa, ukavanyeya asi chii chachinja muhupenyu wako?” (s/o my shona people dem) which basically translates to ‘Ok you’ve spoken ill of xyz, what has changed in your life now? Nothing’. You have not edified yourself or the world by saying that so what was the point. Therefore, speak life. This could be anything, a good example is shown in this verse:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. - Philippians 4:8


You will see a change in your life the more you mind your business. Turn that judgemental stare inwards, critique yourself; what can I change in myself today to be better tomorrow. It sounds moist but a lot people waste so much time looking and watching other people journeys, so much so that they sacrifice their own, then they wonder why they’re not accelerating. Stay in your lane (PERIODT). Be so focused on you that you only look up to encourage and congratulate others. Most of the stress in your life will dissipate (das a fact!)





Another important factor is to protect your energy. Protect what you allow into your sphere of influence. Control what you hear, see, eat and FEEL. In this new age of social media, it’s so easy to get caught up in the excitement and chaos of it all but it’s not the healthiest environment. I can tell you personally, being on twitter/Instagram amidst all these racism, colourism, sexual assault cases etc has been very draining. It’s ok guys! It’s ok to take a day off the apps. It doesn’t make you any less part of the movement. I know this time has been very triggering to a lot of people with personal attachments to some of these topics. All I can say is, take your time. Go away, get caught up with other deadlines, meditate, pray, go outside for some fresh air. What you don’t want, is to create a mental barricade in your mind that you can’t get out of. You don’t want to end in a dark place, isolated; amid dark times.





Honestly, I had planned to write this huge 2000+ word blog post about purpose and alignment (which I still might do) but that subject is too pivotal to discuss it with all these destructions, such as the current state of the world. I just really wanted to say don’t let this world sour your character. Remember: we were born into this world; we didn’t make it. So, while you can push yourself to be a figure of change (which I applaud) you can’t come and kill yourself; the world is the world. You’re going to leave it in no time. Do what you can and somebody else will do the rest. (trust me I feel your sentiment). Just don’t damage yourself at the hands of these worldly issues.

I just don’t understand why and how humanity is no longer a concept. There’s always an ‘ism’ there to strip people from treating each other like humans. There are so many divisions and subdivisions now that we forget the main base principle, we must all abide by: Love.


Genuinely, If I was to die today and had to say something about anything. I would say ‘just love’. It costs so little, but many treat it like a high price purchase. Don’t hate! Any of my people can attest to the fact that every time around me its smiles, encouragement, support and LOVE. That’s because it’s not hard. It comes easy to all of us, we just choose to silence it in the name of protecting ourselves from fake friends and bad relationships etc. Let me say this (lemme tell unnu dis one-time fi di one time lol) and pardon my French but that shit is going to come anyway. No amount of protection can shield you from things that are meant to grow you. Nevertheless, don’t let anybody change your character. Even if somebody comes into my life and ends up being fake so what? I’ve learnt what I need to from them and their behaviour says more about them than me. I say that to say this: don’t let people change you. Don’t let life harden you. Whomever is meant to see the real you, will see you. Don’t worry too much about proving people wrong; let them think as they wish.





Ok so this ended up being a sermon (LOL) but this was just meant to encourage those who need it (including me. Take care of yourself and others. Let your words be a fertiliser; they should always edify. Focus on yourself, knowing yourself. A lot of people speak of ‘finding themselves’ but I say, ‘Keep up with yourself’. You are always changing so make sure you keep up with the latest model of you. Rumi also once said this, and it resonated with me; “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself”. You can dissect that as you wish but please use it.
